Brown adipose tissue thermogenesis precedes food intake in genetically obese Zucker (fa/fa) rats.

In Sprague-Dawley rats, brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis occurs in an episodic ultradian manner (BAT on-periods) as part of the basic rest-activity cycle (BRAC). Eating occurs approximately 15min after the onset of BAT on-periods. Zucker obese (fa/fa) rats eat larger less frequent meals than control rats. In chronically instrumented conscious unrestrained Zucker obese rats we examined u...

Cytokine-induced fever in obese ( fa/ fa) and lean ( Fa/ Fa) Zucker rats.

In earlier work, we reported that genetically obese ( fa/ fa) Zucker rats exhibited significantly greater anorexia than did lean ( Fa/ Fa) Zucker rats to intracerebroventricular infusion of interleukin (IL)-1β. Here, we investigated the fever response of obese ( fa/ fa) and lean ( Fa/ Fa) Zucker rats to intracerebroventricular microinfusion of IL-1β as well as to the following other cytokines: ...

Adipose-tissue lipoprotein lipase activity and cellularity in the genetically obese Zucker rat (fa-fa).

The lipoprotein lipase activity per adipocyte was increased in the genetically obese rat (fa/fa). However, there was no difference between obese and lean animals when the enzyme activities were related to adipocyte surface area. The possible implications of the findings are discussed.

Lean ( Fa/ Fa) but not obese ( fa/ fa) Zucker rats release cholecystokinin at PVN after a gavaged meal.

Neuropeptides play an important role in the integration of dietary signals. Cholecystokinin (CCK) has been implicated in regulating ingestive behavior, particularly satiety. The primary objective of this study was to examine whether the hyperphagia characteristic of obese ( fa/ fa) rats involves impaired neural CCK secretion. Dynamic release of CCK at the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (P...

(+)-Z-Bisdehydrodoisynolic Acid Enhances Basal Metabolism and Fatty Acid Oxidation in Female Obese Zucker Rats

We have previously reported that the synthetic estrogen, (+)-Z-bisdehydrodoisynolic Acid [(+)-Z-BDDA], attenuated weight gain and cardiovascular risk in obese rodents. To determine if these antiobesity effects were attributed to changes in basal metabolism, we assessed indirect calorimetry and metabolic profile in female obese Zucker (OZR) rats provided (+)-Z-BDDA (0.0002% food admixture) for 1...
